Welcome to Unity. We are a new congregation formed from the merger of two congregations in Wilmington, Delaware: Spirit of Life and Zion. We are intentionally multicultural, intergenerational, and dedicated to developing disciples for Christ. This includes a commitment to growing in faith, hope, and love ourselves.

Spirit of Life, founded in 2000, was the only predominately African American Lutheran congregation in Delaware. Zion was the first German-speaking Lutheran church in Delaware (founded in 1848). Both congregations share a history of temporary dwellings and relocations over the course of their ministries.

Unity is located at 2101 Lancaster Avenue, the place that Zion rebulit after being displaced from 6th and Jackson Streets by the construction of Interstate 95 in 1957. The congregation chose to remain in the city rather than moving to the suburbs, and the construction on Lancaster Avenue was completed in 1962. Now, members of both congregations must learn to be the church for the current era in an increasingly diverse neighborhood.

We’re new and so is our website. Stay tuned for additions about the history of both congregations as well as our current plans for service to the community.
